Meet Melissa Adams W/ Barefoot Motion

Posing for belly dancing
Melissa Adams and Yoli Chavez, Co-Teaching the Shake and Bake Belly Dancing class at The Canna House on March 23rd

Meet Melissa Adams, of Barefoot Motion, who offers a unique blend of low-impact dance and yoga with a heightened focus on the healing power of plants. Melissa's journey begins in 2006 when she was diagnosed with chiari malformation, a condition which brain tissue extends into the spinal canal causing severe pain. In 2010 she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and in 2016 she was diagnosed with spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease. Melissa was prescribed a multitude of pharmaceuticals to help cope with her pain from these debilitating diseases. In 2017 she underwent disc replacement surgery and saw a window of opportunity to get off opioids for good. Melissa traveled from Texas to Colorado where she had safe and legal access to cannabis. Melissa utilized the whole plant medicinal value of the cannabis plant and within a weeks time she was 100% off of opioids, and managing her pain without the use of pharmaceuticals. This moment marks the change that she so needed to get her life and health back in her control.

Through cannabis Melissa found dance and the therapeutic benefits of both, now she embraces a healthier lifestyle which in turn gives her a more enriched life. Melissa doesn't just use cannabis, she also advocates for the plant. She spent the better part of 5 years advocating for cannabis reform as well as decriminalization in Texas. As with many "taboo" (not my words, lol) things in Texas, the state wasn't and still isn't ready to move into the flame and spark it up, but that will change in the future, fingers crossed. Facing all of the hurdles that were thrown her way and not having legal and safe access to her medicine, Melissa headed to New Mexico to be closer to family and to have access to her medicine. Since becoming a New Mexico resident Melissa began earning her Associate's Degree and will be graduating this May. When I asked her, what was her motivation to keep going? She replied, " The sheer force of mental resilience within me is truly remarkable. I draw strength from my spiritual faith and the numerous individuals I have inspired along my journey. I am mindful that setting limits for myself might inadvertently encourage others to do the same. I genuinely believe that empowering people with seemingly impossible dreams is the key to realizing my own goals."

Melissa will be co-teaching a beginners belly dancing class titled " Shake and Bake Belly Dancing" on Saturday, March 23rd from 4PM - 5:30PM at The Canna House by High Society Rentals in Clovis, NM. Class participants can expect to start with a 30 minute smoke sesh and then spend the last hour learning some basic belly dancing techniques.
